PARADE CHECK-IN AND ASSEMBLY AREA
All registered parade entries must report to the parade assembly area beginning at 3:30 pm. on Saturday, December 5. The contact person listed on your application should check-in at the registration tent, located at the corner of Spring and 4th Streets. Entries must be checked-in no later than 4:30 p.m. on December 5. The Jaycees reserve the right to cancel any entry not checked-in by 4:30 p.m. Refunds will not be issued to late arrivals. Once checked-in, entries must go to their line-up area and remain there until the parade begins. Vehicles are not permitted to move from their line-up area unless specifically asked to do so by a Jaycees member or a police officer. The Jaycees reserve the right to cancel any entry violating this rule, and no refunds will be issued.
DISTRIBUTION OF MATERIALS
Candy, samples or other materials of any kind may NOT be thrown or otherwise distributed from the float while on the parade route. Violations of this rule will be removed immediately from the parade.
BEHAVIOR
No profanity or offensive behavior will be tolerated before, during or after the parade while still on the parade route. No alcoholic beverages will be allowed on floats or tow vehicles. No drugs or weapons will be permitted in the parade assembly area or on the parade route.
ILLUMINATION
All parade entries must be illuminated. If you have questions about lighting your entry, please refer to the Float Building information.
PORTABLE GENERATORS
Portable generators used in conjunction with float lighting must be securely mounted on a vehicle or other base. A minimum of 12 inches clearance must separate any part of the generator from light and combustible materials, including decorations.
LIGHTING AND FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
Wire and lighting devices must have sufficient capability for the use intended on the float. Wiring should be properly secured to the float. At least one fire extinguisher should be placed within easy reach of the float driver. Extinguishers are required for floats using generators.
WALKING ENTRIES
Walking entries must be at least 8 years old to “walk” in the parade. Children under the age of 8 must ride on a float, in a stroller or inside a vehicle. This rule may be waived at the discretion of Jaycee members.
COSTUMED CHARACTERS
Costumed characters are encouraged on floats. However, no Santa Claus will be permitted. The only Santa of the night will bring up the end of the parade.
SUPERVISION
Entries with children need to have a minimum of two adults per every 10 children present at all times for safety reasons.

WHEN AND WHERE?
The Parade is on December 5, 2009, and will begin promptly at 5 p.m. The parade route starts at the intersection of Fourth Street and Poplar and continues down Fourth Street to the intersection with Liberty. The parade will then turn right onto Liberty and continue all the way down to Corpening Plaza at the intersection of Liberty and First Street.
The parade will go on rain or shine!
REGISTRATION
The registration tent will be located at the corner of Spring Street and Fourth Street. Registration opens at 3:30 p.m. Every entry needs to send a representative to the registration booth before 4 p.m. If you have not completed the registration process by 4:30 p.m., you will be pulled from the lineup and will not receive a refund.
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers will be available on the day of the parade to answer any questions that your group may have. These volunteers can be identified by the red and green tags around their necks. Please pay close attention to the volunteer stationed at your section. It will be noisy and it is important that you listen to and follow their directions.
PAYMENT
All payments must be received prior to your group participating in the parade. NO EXCEPTIONS! If paying the day of the event, payments will only be accepted in the form of cash or money order.
DROP OFF
Parents dropping off children and other participants being dropped off for the parade should use the following route:
From Broad Street turn onto Second Street (It’s one direction only); turn left onto Spring Street; take Spring Street to Fourth Street and stop at the police barricade. Drop the participants off here and the police officer will then open up the barricade so that you can turn left onto Fourth Street and continue back to Broad.
PICK UP
The parade route will end on First Street at Corpening Plaza, and we encourage everyone to stay for the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnerships Tree Lighting Ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Those not staying will be directed to turn right onto First Street or to continue down Liberty and over to the strollway. Parents may pick up their children at the parking lot of 1st Presbyterian or at any of the lots along Fourth Street previously used for staging (all available lots are between Broad and Poplar Streets).
PARADE ETIQUETTE
We ask that anyone participating in the parade remain respectful and that they refrain from using vulgar language. This is a family event and we expect participants to be on their best behavior. The Jaycees reserve the right to remove anyone from the parade who is not acting appropriately.
Whether marching or driving in the parade, please stay close to the group in front of you. If your group is walking and performing in the parade, please do not stop to perform and create a big gap between your entry and the one in front of you. Performances should never stop the parade; your group should always be making forward progress!
SANTA CLAUS
Santa Claus is the guest of honor for the holiday parade and he has already found a float to ride on. Do not put a Santa on your float since we all know that there can only be one!
If you have a homemade float or a vehicle that you are entering in the parade:
- We will tell you your number in line after you check in at registration.
- You will be directed to park on 4th Street, between Spring and Poplar in a space that corresponds to your number.
- If you also have walkers who will be marching alongside the vehicle or homemade entry, they will need to stay together in the designated area.
If you have a group of walkers for the parade:
- One person from your group should go to registration to check in. Preferably the person who filled out the application.
- Walkers will assemble in the Center City West Parking Garage across from the Chamber of Commerce building on Fourth Street.
- Someone from your group will also need to check in with the Jaycee volunteers at the parking garage. They are there to help make sure you are lined up in the proper order. All groups must stay together.
- If your walkers are playing an instrument or performing in the parade, please refrain from practicing in the parking garage. Noise must be kept to a minimum so that all the parade participants can hear the volunteers.
